Waterbury may save on school’s reconstrution

Bids for the reconstruction of Wendell Cross Elementary School have come in millions of dollars cheaper than city officials predicted. The architect and project manager estimated a $50.6 million cost in October. But on Monday, the Board of Aldermen will be asked to sign off on contract amendments that set the cost at $46.2 million. Wendell Cross had been a 41,098-square-foot building serving 350 children in prekindergarten through fifth grade. The aldermen are being asked to sign off on an amendment to its contract with Newfield Construction setting a guaranteed maximum construction cost of $40.6 million, and a completion date of July 31, 2021.
