Bridgeport’s oversight of contractor in FBI probe raises questions

Former Deputy Public Facilities Director Joe Tiago, fired in February following a city scrap metal scandal now under investigation by the FBI, played an ongoing role in the job awarded to Vaz Quality Works of Bridgeport despite having a financial relationship with the owner of Vaz. Although the final cost of the project has not yet been calculated by the city, records indicate it could reach as high as $3.5 million of taxpayer’s money — a 14 percent overrun. Vaz was low bidder for the overall project with an original offer of $2.9 million to do the job.
