No Shortage of Issues for Lawmakers To Address In 2017

The budget — depending on which analyst you believe — is in deficit by $1.3 billion or $1.5 billion and will be a focal point for lawmakers who don’t want to raise taxes or further cut state services. In addition to the budget and labor issues that are likely to consume most of the debate, there are also several pressing policy discussions. While the makeup of the General Assembly has changed, Democratic lawmakers, who hold a slight majority, also raised a proposal for a paid family and medical leave system.
