Just over a month after withdrawing a zoning application to establish a new college in the North End for low-income students, partners Fairfield University and the Bridgeport Roman Catholic Diocese are gauging public support for an alternative site. Increased traffic was one of the issues critics of the initial effort to locate Bellarmine at the diocese’s Jewett Avenue Catholic Center headquarters rallied around when that North End plan was submitted in March for zoning commission approval. In response Wednesday to a request for comment, Fairfield University and the diocese in a joint statement said they “are exploring alternate sites for the location of Bellarmine College” as part of their ongoing commitment “to providing access to higher education opportunities for Bridgeport area students who would otherwise lack access or a path to a college degree.”
