The new building, approximately 48,000 square-foot, will sit at the corner of Maple Street and South Avenue, location of the current library. Officials said the design “will reflect New Canaan’s unique mid-century modern architectural heritage. Designed to be a true cultural campus, it will replace the current outdated and failing structure with a large, airy, 21st century library incorporating the newest technology and sustainable design.” Current plans are for the library to break ground in spring 2021. The construction schedule, which is expected to last 18 to 24 months, calls for the new structure to be built prior to the demolition of the current building so that the library will operate continuously.
