The team of engineers described a 6.1 mile long project, which could take three-quarters of a year to complete, beginning at South Avenue in New Canaan and ending just shy of the Newtown Turnpike Bridge in Westport. The estimated $85 million cost would come 80 percent from federal funds and 20 percent from state funds. The portion of Merritt Parkway connecting New Canaan and Westport will be the last of roughly two decades of work to improve the road.
