Construction boom means New Milford building department is ‘busiest they’ve been in over a decade’

Mayor Pete Bass reported land use and building department officials had informed him they’ve been incredibly busy of late. The town’s building official, Bill Murphy, has been meeting with the mayor every week to update him on permitting and inspections throughout New Milford. This March, the building department issued more than 70 permits, mostly dealing with renovations or new home constructions. People were installing pools, decks, new roofs and garages, as well as building single-family homes. February saw over 35 permits issued. New Milford’s construction trends follow along with the country’s real estate and construction patterns. Last month saw one of the largest home construction booms across the U.S. since 2006, according to the Associated Press. The low number of family homes for sale during the pandemic has resulted in more construction, the AP reported. The area has also seen a significant number of new renters coming into the area, according to Bass.
