One of the tri-state region’s most powerful commercial developers is proposing an enormous residential and retail complex that would add just under 600 homes in Stonington. Breslin Realty’s plan for Liberty Crossing would create more than 110,000 square feet of stores and restaurants along with four three- and four-story multifamily buildings. The Long Island-based company, known for decades as one of the biggest mall developers in the region, wants to use a roughly 67-acre wooded site along Route 2 just off I-95 for its project. It would vastly change the look of Stonington, a wealthy shoreline community best known for its historic village with a heavy nautical theme. But Breslin maintains that Liberty Crossing would be more than an ordinary mixed-used development, and would blend smoothly with the existing community. “Each of the elements of our proposal, including the mix of residential units and commercial uses, combined with the scale, connectedness and walkability and development of a village type project, will give Liberty Crossing a strong sense of place as is present amongst the existing and varying villages in town,” according to a 607-page presentation put together by a team of Breslin’s consultants.
